Barbie Movie Surpasses £1 Billion in Box Office Sales, Astonishing Barbie Executives

(qlmbusinessnews.com Mon, 7th Aug, 2023) London, UK —

In an astounding achievement, the Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, has now garnered over £1 billion in global box office sales. This significant milestone was reached over the weekend, propelled by an additional £99 million in sales.

Directed by Greta Gerwig and featuring Margot Robbie, the hit film coined the term “Barbillion” as it reached this monumental achievement on Sunday. This achievement surpasses the previous box office record for a film by a female director, previously held by Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman.

The film's success also extends to the pace at which it reached the £313 million mark in the US and £392 million mark worldwide, outpacing the performance of other major Warner Bros hits, including the renowned Harry Potter franchise.

Interestingly, the film Oppenheimer, released on the same day three weeks prior, also achieved a milestone, crossing the £392 million global mark over the weekend.

Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps, overseeing domestic and international distribution for Warner Bros, expressed their astonishment at the film's performance, stating, “As distribution chiefs, we're not often rendered speechless by a film's performance, but Barbillion has blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water.”

Warner Bros announced that Barbie reached a total of £809 million worldwide, with £360 million originating from domestic theatres, encompassing the US and Canada, and an additional £448 million from international markets. These impressive figures provide a substantial return on the film's reported £117 million budget and have been validated by media analytics firm Comscore.

Warner Bros' co-chairs and CEOs, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, hailed this achievement as a “testament to her Gerwig's brilliance.”

Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, the film takes Mattel Inc's iconic doll on an adventure into the real world. Both fans and critics have lauded the film, with descriptions such as “painfully funny” by Empire and “dazzling achievement, both technically and in tone” by the Roger Ebert website.

The film's release date of 21 July, which coincided with Nolan's Oppenheimer, prompted the internet trend “Barbenheimer,” as moviegoers aimed to watch both films consecutively.

Last month, the Official Charts Company disclosed that the Barbie soundtrack dominated the UK singles charts, making it the first film soundtrack to secure three top five songs simultaneously. Songs like Billie Eilish's contemplative “What Was I Made For?” at number three, Dua Lipa's “Dance The Night” at number four, and the revamped version of Aqua's “Barbie World” by rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice at number five contributed to this remarkable accomplishment.
