“Tesco Pulls Vegan Burgers Off Shelves After Burn Risk Alert”
Tesco has issued a recall of its “melt in the middle” vegan burgers due to concerns that the product may pose a burn risk to customers. The supermarket giant has warned that the Tesco Plant Chef 2 Meat-Free Burgers with Melting Middle could become excessively hot, particularly in the centre, potentially causing injury when eaten.
Customers who have purchased these meat-free burgers are being advised not to consume them and to return the product to their nearest Tesco store for a full refund. The recall is described as a precautionary measure, with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) supporting the decision.
The FSA alert highlighted that the mustard and gherkin centre of the burger might retain a high temperature after cooking, which could lead to burns if eaten immediately. The product's recall follows reports from customers, some of whom likened the molten middle to “lava” and warned others about the risk of burning.
Although it's unclear exactly when the product was first launched, a vegan blog shared images of the burgers on social media at the end of June. Comments from users noted the extreme heat of the filling, with one user describing it as “like eating the sun.”
Tesco has urged anyone with this product to handle it with caution and to take advantage of the refund offered in stores.
