Starbucks to Limit Facilities Access in North America Amidst Strategy Revamp
Starbucks is set to roll back its policy in North America that allowed non-paying visitors to use its cafes and facilities, including toilets. Starting 27 January, the coffee giant will introduce a new code of conduct aimed at prioritising paying customers as part of its “Back to Starbucks” strategy.
The move marks a reversal of a six-year-old policy that granted free access to Starbucks spaces, introduced in 2018 following the high-profile arrest of two men in a Philadelphia branch. The company has clarified, however, that this change does not apply to the UK, where visitors can continue to use facilities without purchase.
Starbucks' new code of conduct also includes measures against harassment, bans on smoking and outside alcohol, and outlines how staff should address breaches, including the potential involvement of law enforcement.
“This update is a practical step to enhance the cafe experience for paying customers,” a Starbucks spokesperson told BBC News. “It is part of our broader efforts to get back to the core Starbucks experience.”
In addition to these changes, Starbucks is set to offer one free refill of hot or iced coffee for customers consuming their drinks in-store.
The changes come as Starbucks grapples with declining sales, impacted by rising prices and boycotts tied to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The company’s CEO, Brian Niccol, brought in from Chipotle last year, is spearheading efforts to revitalise the business, which include revamped menus and refreshed store designs.
