Meta to Slash 5% of Workforce in Performance-Based Cuts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 5%, aiming to streamline operations by removing underperforming staff.

In a memo to employees, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated the decision reflects a drive for efficiency in what he anticipates will be an “intense year” for the tech giant. He emphasised the need to maintain top talent, saying, “I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster.”

The company, which employs around 72,000 people worldwide, has not disclosed how the cuts will be distributed geographically. US-based employees impacted by the decision will be informed by 10 February, while notifications for international staff will follow later.

Affected employees—estimated at roughly 3,600 individuals—will receive generous severance packages, according to the memo. The roles are expected to be refilled in 2025.

This move is part of a broader pattern of restructuring at Meta, which previously cut 10,000 jobs in 2023 and 11,000 roles in 2022 during what Zuckerberg dubbed the “year of efficiency.”

The announcement follows other significant changes at the company, including the discontinuation of its fact-checking and diversity programmes.

Zuckerberg’s approach to leadership also appears to be evolving. In a podcast with Joe Rogan, the Meta CEO discussed the importance of “masculine energy” in business and shared his enthusiasm for martial arts. “In corporate life, people don’t expect you to be ruthless. But in martial arts, it’s different—it allows me to fully express myself,” he said.

This latest round of layoffs signals a continuation of Meta’s efforts to refine its operations while navigating a challenging year ahead.
