Late August Travel Chaos: Gatwick Baggage Handlers Confirm Strike Dates

A group of baggage screeners at Gatwick Airport are set to walk out in a series of strikes due to a dispute over pay, declared by the Unite union. The industrial action is poised to disrupt the late August bank holiday weekend travel plans, with workers employed by ICTS highlighting that their pay is barely above the minimum wage—making them some of the lowest-paid employees at the airport.

The strikes are scheduled from the 22nd to the 26th of August and will resume from the 29th of August until the 2nd of September. The union has issued a warning that these strikes could escalate further if the issue remains unresolved. ICTS has yet to respond to requests for a statement.

Sharon Graham, General Secretary of Unite, criticised the situation, stating, “ICTS is perfectly capable of providing these workers a decent pay rise. Their refusal to do so can only be seen as an act of corporate greed. Rest assured, Unite will wholly support the Gatwick staff in their strike actions for fair wages for as long as is necessary.”

Unite has indicated that the strikes will disrupt all flights departing from Gatwick Airport and places the blame squarely on ICTS for any inconvenience caused to passengers. Ben Davis, a Unite regional officer, expressed his disbelief at the situation, pointing out that these workers play a crucial part in the airport's operations and yet remain among the least compensated.

In response to the looming strikes, an airport spokesperson remarked, “We are coordinating efforts with our suppliers to minimise disruptions and are optimistic in maintaining our normal operation schedule over the summer holiday. We hope that ICTS and the union will come to a mutually agreeable solution promptly.”
