Yum! Brands Rescues 64 Pizza Hut Outlets in the UK, Saves Over 1,200 Jobs

Pizza Hut is set to close 68 of its dine-in venues and 11 takeaway outlets across the UK, leading to the redundancy of 1,210 staff members, following the insolvency of the company overseeing these establishments.

London-based DC London Pie Limited, responsible for Pizza Hut's operations within the UK, brought in FTI Consulting to manage the administration process starting this Monday.

However, there is a glimmer of hope as Yum! Brands, the international owner of Pizza Hut, has stepped in to rescue 64 restaurants, thereby preserving 1,276 positions within the company.

Famed for its child-friendly atmosphere and iconic salad bar offerings, Pizza Hut has faced notable hurdles in maintaining its foothold in the UK market, enduring administration proceedings less than a year prior.

In an effort to rejuvenate the brand, DC London Pie assumed ownership of Pizza Hut's UK franchises from their previous insolvent state earlier in January of this year. The entity also oversees Pizza Hut franchises in Sweden and Denmark.

A representative for Pizza Hut UK expressed relief and optimism, stating: “We are delighted to have secured the future of 64 sites, ensuring our guests continue to enjoy the Pizza Hut experience while preserving jobs.”

Nicolas Burquier, the executive taking the lead for Pizza Hut across Europe and Canada, mirrored this sentiment, emphasizing the move to acquire targeted outlets was primarily “to safeguard our guest experience and protect as many jobs as we can.”

He further elaborated on the company's immediate focus being the smooth operational transition for the acquired sites, along with providing necessary support to staff during this period of change.

Zoe Adjay, a distinguished senior lecturer in hospitality at the University of East London, pointed out Pizza Hut's pioneering role in introducing the fast-food model to the UK during the 1970s but highlighted its recent struggle to adapt to the evolving market, particularly with the rise of premium pizza offerings capturing significant market share.

Additionally, Ms. Adjay noted Pizza Hut's failure to leverage social media effectively, a strategy that has benefitted its rivals greatly.

Danni Hewson, a leading financial analyst at AJ Bell, suggested that increased running costs coupled with consumer hesitancy have likely exacerbated Pizza Hut's operational challenges. She remarked, “After DC London Pie’s attempt to steer Pizza Hut UK out of its financial distress less than a year ago, the complexities of revitalizing a renowned casual dining brand in today's market have become apparent.”

“Yum! Brands' decision to retake control signifies a strategic move, leveraging decades of insights on consumer preferences and the intricate dynamics essential for a Pizza Hut outlet's success,” Hewson concluded.
