National Highways to Correct 2,650 Wrongful Speeding Penalties After Camera Error

Thousands of motorists in England may see their speeding penalties revoked due to an inconsistency that inaccurately activated some speed cameras on major A roads and motorways.

National Highways disclosed that a glitch had led to 2,650 incorrect speed camera triggers since 2021, attributed to a lag in the synchronisation between cameras and the variable speed limit signs.

Drivers impacted by this error are set to be contacted by the police for a refund of any fines paid, and to have any points mistakenly added to their driving licences removed.

It's important to note that not every mistaken camera activation leads to a fine, indicating that the total number of affected drivers could be fewer.

The chief executive of National Highways, Nick Harris, expressed his apologies over the mishap and assured that a solution to the problem has been pinpointed.

“Safety remains our absolute priority… We urge all motorists to adhere to the displayed speed limits as usual. Those affected will be reached out to by the corresponding police force,” he commented.

The issue was traced back to an “anomaly” in the communication between variable speed cameras and the signaling system on select A roads and motorways, causing a delay of about ten seconds between sign changes and camera activation. This led to drivers being wrongly perceived as speeding following a change in the speed limit.

National Highways emphasized that the 2,650 incidents since 2021 are relatively minor, averaging less than two wrongful detections daily, in the face of over 6 million speed camera activations on the implicated roads during the same timeframe.

Affected stretches comprise 10% of England's motorways and significant A roads, and efforts are underway in collaboration with police authorities to ensure no motorist is unjustly penalised.

Police departments have temporarily ceased issuing penalties from variable speed cameras pending full confidence restoration in their accuracy.

The Department for Transport also extended its apologies to those impacted, reassuring that “Safety was never jeopardised. We are coordinating with police to guarantee that no individual is wrongfully pursued in the future. Whilst enforcement continues, the public should be assured that only those who flout the regulations will face penalties.”
