Passport Fees Set to Increase for Second Time in 14 Months in the UK.
As of Thursday, the cost of obtaining a UK passport will undergo its second hike in just over 14 months. Online applications for new or renewed adult passports will rise from £82.50 to £88.50, marking a 7% increase following a previous 9% rise in February 2023. Consumer watchdog Which? has expressed concerns that travellers scheduled for renewal may find the sudden increase surprising.
The Home Office has clarified that the fee adjustments are not aimed at generating profit but rather at enhancing passport services. According to Which? Travel expert Guy Hobbs, individuals planning to renew their passports are urged to take advantage of the current fees before the price surge takes effect.
Additionally, the cost of applying for a child's passport online will rise from £53.50 to £57.50, while postal applications will increase from £64 to £69. Adult passport applications by post will climb from £93 to £100. Notably, passport applications from overseas or those requiring urgent processing will incur higher fees. However, passports remain free for individuals born on or before 2 September 1929.
Prior to last year's rise, passport fees had remained unchanged for five years, with the standard adult online application costing £75.50. Despite the impending increase, the Post Office will continue to provide its “check and send” service for £16.

Guy Hobbs highlighted that the recent surge in passport fees places the UK among the most expensive in Europe. For instance, an online application for a UK passport at £88.50 is pricier compared to countries like Switzerland (£122), Denmark (£103), and Italy (£99.50).
The Home Office emphasized that the elevated fees are essential for covering passport delivery costs and reducing reliance on tax funding.
Amidst the fee adjustments, holidaymakers travelling to the EU are advised to be aware of the “passport 10-year rule.” Post-Brexit, EU countries no longer accept passports issued more than 10 years ago, leading to potential travel disruptions for some UK travellers.
