AI Chatbots Revolutionise Lives for Neurodiverse Individuals
For many, AI chatbots are merely a technological curiosity, but for some, they have become life-changing.
Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar, from North Yorkshire, lives with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These conditions made written assignments particularly challenging until she discovered AI.
“A few years ago, I was introduced to Jasper, and it transformed my life,” says Ms Shaheen-Zaffar, a qualified psychotherapist. “It became my friend.” She uses Jasper to refine the structure and spelling of her written work, which now includes a recently published self-help book for people with neurodiversity.
Neurodiversity encompasses a range of conditions including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, Tourette's, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
London-based tech entrepreneur Alex Sergent finds AI helpful in managing his OCD. He uses Otter.ai, an AI-powered transcription app, to record and organise his meetings. Mr Sergent explains that while his attention to detail and rituals have been burdensome, AI allows him to delegate tasks comfortably.
Neurodiversity specialist coach and trainer Hayley Brackley suggests that the appeal of AI tools for people with psychiatric or psychological conditions lies in their ease of use. “There’s no shame or stigma in asking ChatGPT, or any other AI tool, to do something,” she says.
Ms Brackley, who has dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, appreciates how AI chatbots enable her to “outsource my challenge without having to overly explain why to another human.” She likens AI to a supportive tool: “If a crutch helps you walk, why wouldn’t you use it? If AI makes your working world easier, why not use it?”
In her work with companies and their neurodiverse employees, Ms Brackley notes that some firms are more open to introducing assistive AI tools than others. However, she believes that making AI available to the entire workforce benefits everyone. “We put something in place for a minority, but it ends up helping a majority without disadvantaging anyone.”
While many AI tools used by the neurodiverse community are mainstream products, some are specifically designed for them. One such offering is Goblin Tools, a website and app powered by ChatGPT. Users can create to-do lists, formalise written sentences, interpret email tones, estimate task durations, and even get cooking tips.
Goblin Tools was created by Belgian software engineer Bram De Buyser as a tribute to his neurodivergent friends. “My friends have certain struggles and needs, so I thought maybe I could build something that will – if not completely help them – at least alleviate some of that struggle.” The website now has 500,000 monthly users and is free to use, though the app versions require payment.

AI chatbots have also been developed for neurodiverse children, such as InnerVoice, an app by Californian tech firm iTherapy. Designed for children with autism, it allows parents to animate objects or people from the child’s life into talking avatars.
Matthew Guggemos, co-founder of iTherapy, explains that autistic children often engage more with computers than the real world. He believes AI will continue to play a significant role in assisting the neurodivergent. “AI can give neurodivergent people extra tools and help them communicate with less effort,” he says.
