Is the Electric Vehicle Hype Diminishing? Lamborghini Bets on Hybrids for the Next Decade

The head of Lamborghini has articulated that the firm's clientele hold a strong preference for the “sound and the emotion” evoked by traditional internal combustion engines, revealing plans to continue their use in the marque's vehicles for at least the next ten years.

In a dialogue with the Reporters at the brand's London showroom, Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO, conveyed a noticeable dip in the enthusiasm for electric vehicles, suggesting a pivot towards hybrid technology could represent a strategic move forward.

Is the Electric Vehicle Hype Diminishing? Lamborghini Bets on Hybrids for the Next Decade

Lamborghini is at a crossroads, deliberating whether its forthcoming model, the Lanzador, will embrace a fully electric design or opt for a plug-in hybrid configuration, with a decision expected imminently.

Winkelmann stressed the company's commitment to social responsibility but acknowledged the relatively minor environmental impact due to its low production volume.

Part of the Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini boasts a portfolio of three primary models: the Temerario and Revuelto supercars, both of which are plug-in hybrids with limited electric-only range, and the Urus, a luxury SUV available in both plug-in hybrid and traditional petrol versions. Despite its less flamboyant design, the Urus accounts for the majority of the brand's sales. Additionally, Lamborghini is producing a limited edition super-sports car, the Fenomeno, capable of speeds over 215mph, with only 30 units being made available at a starting price of €3m (£2.6m) pre-taxes.

A shift from earlier ambitions for an all-electric replacement for the Urus by 2029 to a delay until at least 2035 illustrates the brand's reconsideration of its electrification strategy. Similarly, the fate of the proposed all-electric Lanzador grand tourer remains uncertain.

Amidst a perceived decline in the allure of electric vehicles among premium consumers, Winkelmann sees an extended window for internal combustion engines complemented by battery technology, suggesting a preference among his clientele for the traditional engine's sensory experience.

In contrast, Lamborghini's Italian competitor Ferrari is progressing with plans for its inaugural all-electric model, the Elettrica, set for unveiling next year, highlighting a diverging approach in the luxury car market.

Winkelmann also addressed emissions concerns, pointing out Lamborghini's minor impact relative to global automotive production and questioned the meaningfulness of their emissions reduction relative to the industry at large.

Regulatory landscapes in the EU and UK are poised to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, with current exemptions for “low volume” manufacturers like Lamborghini, allowing them to navigate the impending shifts in automotive propulsion technology uniquely tailored to their market niche.
