Nvidia's Leader Receives 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize Amidst AI Safety Warnings from King Charles
In an extraordinary encounter, Nvidia's chief, Jensen Huang, was personally handed a letter by King Charles III, containing a poignant message about the potential perils of artificial intelligence (AI). This revelation came as Huang spoke to the Reporters, following his prestigious recognition with the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering during a formal gathering at St James’s Palace.
The correspondence in question was a transcript of a speech the King had delivered at the inaugural AI Summit at Bletchley Park in 2023. His Majesty emphasized the necessity for immediate and collective action to address the risks associated with AI technologies. Huang shared, “It was his speech on AI safety. He obviously cares very deeply about AI safety.”

The King's impassioned speech outlined his belief in AI's extraordinary potential to revolutionise not just the UK but the entire globe. Yet, he also cautioned that this powerful technology harbours the capacity for both beneficial and malicious use, underscoring the importance of prioritising AI safety.
In his landmark address, King Charles likened the advancement of groundbreaking AI to the significance of discovering electricity, highlighting the monumental impact such technologies have on society.
Huang's accolade, the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, was also awarded to six other pioneers in the field of AI, including esteemed Professors Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton. Both professors have expressed concern over AI's existential threat to humanity.
Contrastingly, former US President Donald Trump has pushed for the AI industry to undertake rapid developments, over cautionary progress. Reflecting this stance, the AI Safety Summit underwent a rebranding to the AI Action Summit earlier in the year.
Senator Howard Lutnick has voiced against the emphasis on ‘safety', arguing that it portrays a narrative of fear. Amidst these divergent views, Huang's company, Nvidia, has reached an astonishing valuation of $5tn. The corporation, renowned for its cutting-edge computer chips critical for AI applications, stands at the forefront of this technological frontier.
Huang expressed optimism about the UK's potential in leveraging what he termed “an industrial revolution that's happening right now.” He viewed it as a golden opportunity for the country. With significant investments from major US tech institutions, including Nvidia, the UK's AI infrastructure is rapidly expanding, notably through the construction of extensive data centres, or “AI factories,” as Huang calls them. This development signals a transformative era in the technological landscape, marked by the fusion of innovation and governance.
