China Retaliates Against US and EU Amid Escalating Trade Disputes.

China has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of polyoxymethylene copolymer from the US, EU, Taiwan, and Japan. This plastic, widely used in electronics and automotive industries, is now at the centre of escalating trade tensions between China and its Western counterparts.

The Ministry of Commerce’s announcement signals China's intent to respond forcefully to what it views as unfair trade practices by the US and Europe. This development follows a series of recent tariff increases by the US on Chinese goods, including electric vehicles (EVs), solar panels, and computer chips. These measures build on the extensive tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.

China's commerce ministry condemned the latest US tariffs, stating they would “severely affect the atmosphere for bilateral cooperation” and criticised the politicisation of economic matters. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry vowed to “take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

China Retaliates Trade

In a related move, China sanctioned three American defence firms—General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, General Dynamics Land Systems, and Boeing Defense, Space & Security—over their arms sales to Taiwan. These sanctions bar the companies from “import and export” activities in China, and prohibit senior executives from entering, working, or living in the country.

Europe is also ramping up its scrutiny of Chinese imports. The European Union announced an investigation into Chinese tinplate steel imports, adding to its ongoing probes into two Chinese solar panel manufacturers suspected of receiving government subsidies. The European Commission (EC) is set to decide by 4 July whether to impose measures against Chinese-made EV imports.

These actions underscore the growing friction in global trade relations, as China, the US, and the EU continue to navigate their complex economic and political interests.
