TGI Fridays UK to Cut 1,000 Jobs Despite Rescue Deal
Over 1,000 employees of TGI Fridays in the UK are set to lose their jobs, despite a rescue deal by the owners of D&D London, a restaurant group. The American-themed restaurant chain’s UK operations were recently acquired after the business fell into administration last month.
The rescue package will secure nearly 2,400 jobs across 51 locations, but administrators Teneo confirmed that 35 branches have been permanently closed. TGI Fridays UK stated it is actively working with landlords in an attempt to save these shuttered restaurants.
Julie McEwan, the chief executive of TGI Fridays UK, expressed her sorrow at the job losses, saying, “We are doing everything in our power to support our team and those affected.” She also extended her gratitude to the departing staff for their loyalty and contributions.

The new owners, Breal Capital and Calveton UK, who also operate chains like Byron Burgers and Vinoteca, said they aim to modernise TGI Fridays while preserving its heritage. A spokesperson noted, “This deal preserves a large number of jobs and will hopefully provide the business with the stability and backing it needs to recover and grow.”
However, the job cuts have sparked anger from the hospitality workers’ union Unite. Bryan Simpson, Unite’s lead organiser for hospitality, described the treatment of staff as “a national disgrace.” The union claims that employees were locked out of their workplaces without warning when certain locations were closed, leaving many unsure if they would receive their wages, holiday pay, or even their tips.
