Christmas Turkey Supply at Risk Amid Unite Union Strike
The Unite union has issued a stark warning about a potential shortage of Christmas turkeys in supermarkets, as it prepares for industrial action against Shropshire-based logistics firm Culina.
The strike, set to take place on 19 and 20 December, involves approximately 40 delivery drivers who transport poultry for Avara Foods in Hereford to major supermarket warehouses, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer. Unite says the strike stems from Culina's failure to offer its drivers a pay increase, despite negotiations that began in April.
Unite criticised Culina’s stance, likening it to “playing the role of Scrooge” during the festive season. A spokesperson for the union warned, “Families could see empty tables this Christmas due to a lack of turkeys.”
The union has also signalled that further strike dates may follow if Culina does not present an improved pay offer.

Culina, part of the Müller group headquartered in Market Drayton, and Avara Foods have yet to issue statements regarding the industrial action.
This dispute threatens to disrupt one of the season's most beloved traditions, leaving families and retailers uncertain about whether festive feasts will go ahead as planned.
