Terence Crawford Loses World Title Following Triumph Over Canelo Alvarez

In a shocking turn of events, Terence Crawford has been relieved of his WBA super welterweight championship mere days after outclassing Canelo Alvarez.

Abass Baraou Promoted to WBA Super Welterweight Champion Following Crawford's Surprising Title Loss

The American boxer, known as ‘Bud', ascended two weight categories to challenge the reigning super-middleweight champion in a Las Vegas spectacular, commanding significant portions of the bout. The fight concluded with unanimous approval in Crawford's favour from the judges, tallying scores at 116-112 and 115-113 twice.

However, it was subsequently revealed that Crawford will no longer carry the WBA super welterweight title. The 37-year-old had made it clear to the sanctioning officials that he would not return to the 154lb division, leading to the decision to strip him of the title.

The void left by Crawford has been filled by Abass Baraou, the 30-year-old German fighter, who was elevated from interim to full world champion status. Baraou had clinched the interim title in August following a notable victory over Yoenis Tellez in Florida.

The announcement was made by Wasserman Boxing, Baraou's promoters. “Abass Baraou is now the full world champion. With a seat at the pinnacle of the division secured, who do you think he should face next?” read the statement.

Speculation is rife that Jermell Charlo might be Baraou's first title defence opponent. Despite not having competed since his loss to Canelo in 2023, the 35-year-old holds the title of WBA's ‘champion-in-recess', positioning him as the mandatory challenger.

Meanwhile, the next steps for Crawford remain uncertain. In a conversation with Ariel Helwani, he hinted at retirement being on the table and flirted with the idea of dropping to the 160lb division. “Retirement is a real possibility,” Crawford admitted, suggesting his future plans might become clearer in the forthcoming months.

Crawford's close ally, Shakur Stevenson, has openly advised him to retire on the back of his landmark victory. Appearing on The Ariel Helwani Show, Stevenson expressed his concern for Crawford's wellbeing, emphasising the toll that training camps have taken on him. “I think he's achieved everything possible in boxing. Making one of our generation's best fighters look ordinary is no small feat. He should retire on top,” Stevenson remarked.

As the boxing community awaits Crawford's decision, attention shifts to the upcoming match between Ben Crocker and Sean McComb in Sheffield on September 27. The bout, set for around 10pm UK time, will be available live on DAZN, offering fans worldwide the chance to tune in.
