The Rising Costs of Video Games: A Closer Look at the £75 Mario Kart and $100 GTA 6 Predictions
What Can a Game's Price Tag Reveal About Its Quality in the UK?
In the UK, forking out £70 for a video game typically signals that you're investing in a major release, often referred to as a “AAA” title. These games, known for their considerable budgets, extensive development teams, and leading-edge visuals, promise expansive worlds and countless hours of entertainment.

However, 2025 saw Nintendo pushing the boundaries of game retail prices with flagship Switch titles such as Mario Kart World hitting the shelves at £74.99, while its American counterpart was priced at $79.99. Concurrently, rumblings from a 2025 report by the gaming consultancy firm Epyllion hinted at the next Grand Theft Auto entry setting a precedent with a staggering $100 price tag, potentially ushering in a new era of pricing strategies within the industry.
Amid these skyrocketing costs, a series of recent titles that have been praised for creating experiences comparable to those of AAA games—like ARC Raiders, Split Fiction, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—opted for a more approachable price range of £30-£40. Clair Obscur, in particular, has garnered a record-breaking 436 game of the year accolades, an achievement that hasn't gone unnoticed. Alexis Garavaryan, the figurehead of the game's publisher Kepler Interactive, shared with the Reporters that their choice to price the game below the typical blockbuster rate was a conscious decision.
Garavaryan remarked, “We’ve observed a pattern of price increases among larger firms and intentionally took a contrary approach. We aim to set our prices lower than what we believe they could be.”
He also suggests a shift in consumer preference away from the traditional draws of AAA titles, such as high-definition graphics and extensive playtime, towards a craving for unique and extraordinary gaming experiences. This shift poses the question: Is it becoming increasingly difficult to justify the premium prices of blockbuster titles?
In a related narrative, a 2026 consumer study uncovered that a majority of gamers are reducing their expenditure on new games, with a mere 4% purchasing a new title more frequently than once a month, and a significant one-third not purchasing any new games at all.
While the developers behind GTA 6, Take Two Interactive and Rockstar, have yet to announce their pricing plans for the highly anticipated sequel, there's broad speculation that its price tag will surpass current benchmarks, especially considering the game's extensive development cycle and manpower investment.
Garavaryan underscored that Kepler Interactive's pricing strategy, which diverges from the norm, is aimed at presenting players with what he considers “a bargain,” ensuring consumers feel their time and money are valued.
Kepler Interactive, whilst not a small indie outfit, operates as a collective comprising several independent studios. Rebekah Valentine, a senior reporter at IGN, observed that despite Clair Obscur's success, it doesn't necessarily signify a widespread departure from AAA expectations, highlighting that titles that offer ongoing play with friends, like Fortnite and Call of Duty, consistently attract the most players.
Similarly, Christopher Dring, The Game Business editor-in-chief, acknowledged that while some lower-budget games achieve significant success, blockbuster titles such as Resident Evil Requiem and GTA 6 remain the most anticipated releases of the year, highlighting the importance of engaging content in an oversaturated market.
Garavaryan remains optimistic that Kepler Interactive’s unique initiatives, including the production of a physical magazine, will appeal to those seeking a more tangible connection in an increasingly digital age, concluding, “There's definitely an audience out there that values well-made, human-crafted products.”
