Tesco to Revamp Workforce in Response to Changing Consumer Habits: Inside the Job Shuffle

Tesco has announced plans to eliminate 180 positions at its Welwyn Garden City head office in Hertfordshire, attributing the decision to the evolving shopping habits of its clientele. Despite the job cuts, the retail behemoth has declared its intent to introduce 250 new roles within the existing teams at its Hertfordshire base, though it has remained tight-lipped about the specific positions that will be affected.

Ken Murphy, the Chief Executive of Tesco, relayed to PA Media his commitment to maintaining Tesco's reputation for value and customer service. “As we anticipate the evolving needs of our customers, it's imperative that Tesco adapts to remain ahead in a fiercely competitive market. This requires us to be both efficient and flexible in our operations,” he explained.

This restructuring comes on the heels of previous job reductions at Tesco, which last year saw about 400 positions axed from its bakeries, mobile department, and head office as part of a strategy to streamline operations.

Despite these changes, Tesco forecasts a profit margin between £2.9bn and £3.1bn for the current financial year. Murphy emphasised the importance of the company's ability to adapt, noting, “In responding to our customers' shifting needs, we must ensure our setup and capabilities are appropriately aligned. Consequently, we're initiating discussions with our colleagues about proposed alterations which involve both the removal and creation of roles at our head office.”

In response to the announced cuts, Tesco has entered into consultation with Usdaw, the trade union representing its employees. Daniel Adams, Usdaw's national officer, expressed his regret over the company’s decision, especially given Tesco's strong performance. Adams highlighted the union's commitment to thorough consultation, aiming to scrutinise the rationale behind the company's plans and to secure the best possible outcome for any members affected by the changes.
