Amazon Calls for Return to Office for Workers

(qlmbusinessnews.com Fri, 11th Aug, 2023) London, UK —

Amazon has sent out warning emails to its US employees who have not been spending sufficient time in the office, as their attendance records were tracked.

The email indicated that some employees were “not currently meeting our expectation of joining your colleagues in the office at least three days a week.”

This move by Amazon follows in the footsteps of other tech giants like Disney and Zoom, which have also shifted away from the flexible working arrangements that became prominent during the pandemic.

The office attendance mandate for Amazon's American employees was implemented in May, requiring them to “badge in” to the office for at least three days every week.

Sent this week, the email specifically targeted employees who had spent fewer than three days a week in the office for five or more of the past eight weeks, or for three or more of the past four weeks.

The email has generated some friction within the company, with some employees claiming to have received it in error.

Earlier in June, a group of Amazon employees in the US organized a walkout in protest of the company's push to return to office work. They cited low morale due to what they referred to as “short-sighted decisions” made by leadership.

This recent warning from Amazon has raised questions among workers about the possibility of even stricter attendance requirements in the future.

In response to concerns raised by employees, Amazon clarified that the warning emails were sent to those who fell short of the attendance policy, even though the office spaces were prepared for their return. The company also acknowledged that some of the warnings might have been mistakenly sent out.

While remote work became more prevalent during the pandemic, many companies are now reconsidering their flexible work policies due to concerns about potential impacts on productivity. Hybrid working arrangements seem to be the direction most companies are taking.

When Amazon initially introduced the new attendance requirements in May, CEO Andy Jassy stated that this change aimed to enhance communication, career development, and corporate culture within the company.
