This move comes on the heels of a challenging period for the conglomerate. A departure from tradition, the group's staff members, referred to as partners, did not receive their annual bonus due to the company's financial performance, marking only the second occurrence of this since 1953.

The John Lewis Partnership is in the process of enlisting a workforce of more than 10,000 individuals as the festive rush approaches.

Out of this number, approximately 1,700 roles will be offered on a permanent basis, while the remaining 8,400 will be temporary, aimed at meeting the seasonal demand.

The partnership presides over both the prestigious John Lewis department store chain and the high-end Waitrose supermarket.

In an official statement, the company has unveiled the availability of 2,900 temporary positions within its 34 John Lewis outlets, spanning sales and merchandising roles.

Simultaneously, Waitrose is pursuing candidates for roles such as supermarket assistants, night shift workers, and customer delivery drivers, intended to cater to the requirements of its 329 shops.

Furthermore, the company is advertising an additional 2,700 roles within its supply chain. This includes vacancies for warehouse operatives and drivers, essential for facilitating deliveries and fulfilling click-and-collect orders.

Lisa Berry, an executive director within the John Lewis Partnership, conveyed, “We take immense pride in the manner in which our two brands have become synonymous with the festive spirit. This presents a remarkable opportunity to be an integral part of the excitement during this special season.”

Berry emphasised the centrality of customers in the company's operations, expressing the commitment to offer an exceptional holiday season featuring captivating products and superlative customer service, all delivered by the company's outstanding partners.

The decision to embark on this recruitment initiative comes in the wake of a series of demanding months for the conglomerate.

In March, it disclosed an annual deficit amounting to £234 million, coupled with a cautionary note about potential job reductions.

The absence of the customary annual bonus for partners, stemming from the company's financial performance, was an uncommon occurrence, marking only the second instance of such an event since 1953.

In May, Dame Sharon White, Chair of John Lewis and a former senior civil servant, faced a confidence vote from the staff, leading to her receiving criticism.

Despite earlier reports indicating potential shifts in the partnership model, Dame Sharon unequivocally affirmed, “The employee-owned essence of the John Lewis Partnership will remain unaltered. There are no ifs or buts about it.”
