Travel Chaos: Airlines Suspend Israel Flights Amid Security Concerns

(qlmbusinessnews.com Mon, 9th Oct, 2023) London, UK —

Airlines Disrupt Flights to Israel Amid Escalating Conflict.

In the wake of escalating violence in the region, major airlines worldwide are cancelling or delaying flights to Israel, causing significant travel disruptions. The deteriorating security situation has prompted airlines to take precautionary measures.

Virgin Atlantic has issued warnings about cancellations and delays affecting flights to Tel Aviv, while British Airways (BA) has adjusted its flight schedule. At the same time, several US carriers, including Air France, Lufthansa, and Emirates, have suspended services to Israel.

Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, has claimed responsibility for targeting Israel's Ben Gurion airport with missiles, further exacerbating the crisis. The conflict, which began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, has resulted in approximately 700 casualties in Israel and around 500 deaths in Gaza due to retaliatory air strikes.

Virgin Atlantic has already cancelled eight flights between Tel Aviv and London Heathrow, spanning from Saturday to the upcoming Wednesday. A spokesperson for the airline emphasized that passenger and crew safety is their top priority, and they continuously assess the situation.

UK budget carrier Wizz Air confirmed the cancellation of Tel Aviv flights until further notice. EasyJet also halted flights on Sunday and Monday and indicated potential schedule adjustments for the rest of the week. BA modified its daily Heathrow to Tel Aviv flights, rescheduling them to depart in the morning instead of the afternoon, partly to avoid crew overnight stays in Israel. BA is closely monitoring the situation and has introduced a flexible booking policy allowing passengers to change travel dates without fees.

Although some flights continue to operate at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, including services by Ryanair and Pegasus, Ryanair later announced the cancellation of several flights to and from Tel Aviv on Monday, advising passengers to check for updates.

On Sunday, US carriers United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines all announced the suspension of direct flights to Israel. United mentioned that its flights would remain paused “until conditions allow them to resume,” while Delta stated that flights “have been cancelled into this week.”

As a result of the crisis, approximately 300 Polish and Hungarian nationals have been evacuated via flights, and Thailand and Nepal are reportedly considering similar evacuation efforts.

Cruise operator Royal Caribbean has also adjusted multiple itineraries in the region and is notifying affected customers.

For travellers with imminent plans to visit Israel, the Association of British Travel Agents recommends discussing options with their travel agents or tour operators. Those on package holidays impacted by cancellations can opt to reschedule, choose an alternative destination, or receive a full refund. Independent travellers are advised to liaise with their airline and accommodation providers regarding their options.

The situation remains fluid, and airlines are closely monitoring developments while prioritizing passenger safety and travel flexibility.
