🦃 Turkey Triumph or Pricey Pies? Navigating the Christmas Dinner Expense 🌲

Preparing for the festive feast? Brace yourself for a slightly pricier Christmas dinner. While the cost of a frozen supermarket turkey has only seen a modest 1.2% increase, mince pies have skyrocketed by 25%. Our reporters found that higher-end items like potatoes, stuffing mix, and Brussels sprouts have become more affordable, offering some respite to consumers.

According to research from retail tracking platform Assosia, comparing prices across major supermarkets, a typical Christmas dinner now totals around £32.35—a 4.3% increase from last year's £31. This includes essentials like turkey, stuffing, gravy, pigs in blankets, potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips, Christmas pudding, and mince pies.

The star of the Christmas table, the turkey, experienced a meager 1.2% price hike, but it remains 20% more expensive than in 2021 due to last year's avian flu outbreak. Carrots witnessed the most significant increase, soaring by 27%, while mince pies and onion gravy granules rose by 25% and 18%, respectively.

Despite some price hikes, there's good news for turkey lovers. Stuart Bebbington, owner of SJ Bebbington butcher in Chester, assured customers of ample turkey availability, contributing to a calmer and more stable Christmas atmosphere.

The price increase is attributed to various factors, including challenging growing conditions for potatoes and carrots. Scott Walker, CEO of GB Potatoes, cited difficult weather conditions, with insufficient rain at the beginning of the year and floods towards the end, leading to an almost 9% rise in roast potato prices.

Carrot prices surged by nearly 27%, influenced by retail pricing strategies rather than direct farmer payments. Carrots, often used as loss leaders, entice customers into stores with the hope of additional profitable purchases.

As for mince pies, despite price hikes due to ingredient costs, customers remain unwilling to forgo this festive treat. Lena Lloyd-Jones, assistant manager at Chatwins baker in Chester, noted that customers continue to indulge in mince pies, albeit with some adjustments in purchasing behavior.

Supermarket price comparisons reveal that the cost of your Christmas dinner varies by retailer. Aldi emerged as the most budget-friendly option at around £26.31, followed by Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's. Morrisons topped the list as the most expensive, with a total cost of £35.66.

So, as you plan your festive meal, consider where you shop to make your Christmas dinner both delightful and economical.
