“TikTok and Temu Under Fire: Hazardous Heaters Prompt Urgent Action”
Popular online platforms TikTok and Temu have decided to remove cheap electric heaters from their virtual shelves following alarming findings by consumer group Which?. The investigation revealed that these heaters, priced as low as £7.20, could potentially cause explosions or house fires due to safety failures.
Which? conducted tests on eight different heaters, uncovering that most of them failed to meet UK safety standards, posing a significant risk to users. Some of these devices were endorsed by influencers on TikTok, further exacerbating the safety concerns.
Both TikTok and Temu emphasized their commitment to customer safety but have promptly removed the hazardous heaters from their platforms. However, despite this action, Which? reported the emergence of similar listings replacing the withdrawn items.
These incidents underscore the need for better regulation of cheap electric heaters in the market. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, stressed the urgency for the government to hold online marketplaces accountable for unsafe products, preventing them from reaching consumers.
Influencers promoting these heaters on TikTok have also come under scrutiny, with concerns raised about their role in endorsing potentially dangerous products. Lesley Rudd, Chief Executive of Electrical Safety First, emphasized the moral responsibility of influencers to ensure the safety of products they recommend to their followers.
With the shift towards online shopping, current regulations are deemed inadequate, leaving consumers vulnerable to unsafe products sold by new online sellers. This situation highlights the pressing need for updated laws to safeguard consumers from such risks.
Which? conducted tests on five portable heaters from TikTok Shop and three from Temu, with only one deemed safe for home use and legal for sale in the UK.
In response to the findings, a Temu spokesperson expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured that immediate action had been taken to address the safety issues. Similarly, TikTok reiterated its commitment to removing merchants or products that violate their policies to ensure consumer safety.
