“EU Launches Probe into TikTok Over Child Protection: What You Need to Know”

The European Union (EU) has initiated a formal investigation into TikTok, the Chinese-owned short video platform, over concerns related to online content regulations and child safeguarding measures. The investigation, launched under the Digital Services Act (DSA), aims to determine whether TikTok has violated rules regarding the protection of minors, transparency in advertising practices, and the prevention of harmful content dissemination through its algorithms.

Thierry Breton, the EU Commissioner for Internal Market, emphasized the importance of prioritizing children's safety online under the DSA. The inquiry focuses on issues such as age verification procedures, privacy settings for minors' accounts, and the impact of TikTok's algorithms on guiding users towards potentially harmful content.

TikTok has previously faced regulatory actions for its handling of children's data. Last year, the Irish data protection authority fined TikTok for breaching EU data laws, while the UK Information Commissioner's Office imposed fines for illegal data processing of children under the age of 13. Companies found in violation of the DSA could face fines of up to 6% of their global turnover.

In response to the investigation, TikTok reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of young users on its platform. The company highlighted its efforts to implement safety features and settings, particularly aimed at protecting teenagers and preventing underage users from accessing the platform.

The EU's inquiry into TikTok marks the second formal investigation under the DSA, following a similar probe into Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The investigations underscore the EU's commitment to enforcing digital regulations and holding tech companies accountable for their compliance with online content and data protection laws.

The outcome of the investigation will depend on various factors, including the complexity of the case and TikTok's cooperation with the authorities. The scrutiny of TikTok reflects the broader regulatory challenges faced by digital platforms in addressing issues related to content moderation, data privacy, and child safety in the online environment.
