Tesco Forced to Redesign Clubcard Logo After Losing Battle with Lidl.
In a victory for German discount supermarket Lidl, Tesco has been ordered to stop using its current Clubcard Prices logo after a prolonged legal tussle between the two retail giants.
The Court of Appeal upheld a previous High Court ruling that Tesco's Clubcard logo – a yellow circle on a blue square background – infringed on Lidl's trademark and took “unfair advantage” of the discounter's reputation for low prices.
Lidl originally launched the lawsuit against Britain's biggest grocer in 2020, arguing that Tesco had deliberately mimicked its branding to mislead shoppers into thinking its Clubcard deals were similarly budget-friendly.
While Tesco had appealed the 2023 High Court judgement, the Court of Appeal has now backed Lidl's case, leaving the UK supermarket chain with no choice but to redesign the Clubcard logo in the coming weeks.
In a statement, a jubilant Lidl said: “We are delighted the Court of Appeal has agreed with the High Court that Tesco's use of its Clubcard logo is unlawful. We expect Tesco to now respect the Court's decision and change its logo to one that is not designed to look like ours.”
For its part, Tesco voiced disappointment but maintained its Clubcard scheme offering “thousands of deals” would continue unimpacted apart from the redesigned logo.
“We are disappointed with the judgement relating to the shape and colour of the logo, but Clubcard Prices will still play a central role in rewarding our members,” a Tesco spokesperson stated.

Marketing experts suggest the rebranding presents an opportunity for Tesco to get creative, though caution the costs could be expensive. Seasoned brand consultant Campbell Rigg criticized Tesco for failing to conduct proper “benchmarking” research before developing the original Clubcard logo.
As the UK's supermarket turf war intensifies, the legal skirmish underscores how fiercely retailers will protect their brand identity and perceived value proposition in the battle for customer loyalty.
