Energy Secretary Expresses Discontent Over Low Compensation Numbers for Forced Prepayment Meters.
The Energy Secretary has voiced strong dissatisfaction over the inadequate number of compensation payouts made to individuals wrongly subjected to prepayment meters, deeming the figures “completely unacceptable”. Out of 150,000 individuals assessed, only 1,500 have received financial redress from energy suppliers responsible for the forced installation of meters in their homes.
Claire Coutinho has urgently addressed the issue, emphasizing the need for swift action to rectify compensation discrepancies. Despite energy suppliers asserting that only around 2,500 individuals require compensation, Ofgem, the energy regulator, confirmed that approximately 150,000 cases have been reviewed thus far. However, the data excludes British Gas, currently under a separate investigation for violating Ofgem regulations.
The discovery of the reprehensible practice, wherein vulnerable individuals had prepayment meters forcibly fitted into their homes, sparked public outrage. Responding to concerns regarding the government's handling of the situation, Ms. Coutinho assured that necessary measures would be taken to expedite compensation processes.

Ofgem is collaborating with energy suppliers to ensure the identification and prompt compensation of eligible consumers, with an update on compensation cases expected by the end of June. Energy UK underscored the importance of prepayment meters in preventing further debt escalation and highlighted the implementation of stricter regulations governing forced meter installations.
Prepayment meters, requiring upfront payment for energy use, are prevalent in about four million UK households. Despite recent permissions for forced meter installations under stringent guidelines, rules remain in place to protect at-risk customers from such actions by energy suppliers.
