Pilots at Aer Lingus Near Strike After Overwhelming Ballot Support
Aer Lingus pilots have taken a significant step towards potential strike action after overwhelmingly voting in favour of industrial action.
Members of the Irish Airline Pilots' Association (IALPA) voted 99% in support of measures up to and including a strike, amid a dispute with the airline over pay.
Speaking to reporters, IALPA president Captain Mark Tighe stated that a strike this summer is “not inevitable.” However, he emphasised that the next step is for Aer Lingus management to “understand the strength of feeling” among pilots and recognise that they “will not back down.”
The vote was conducted in person over the weekend, with an 89% turnout. This follows an electronic ballot last week, which Aer Lingus had questioned the validity of.
Captain Tighe described the latest ballot result as “an incredible reaffirmation of our mandate for industrial action in pursuit of a meaningful pay offer.”
Aer Lingus responded by stating that “any decision by IALPA to now serve notice of industrial action would be entirely unnecessary and would result in significant disruption to the airline's customers and other employees.”
A spokesperson for Aer Lingus added that any industrial action would not affect the regional services operating between Belfast and Great Britain.
