“Labour Government Intensifies Immigration Enforcement This Summer”

The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has announced that immigration officers will increase their enforcement actions over the summer, focusing on car washes and parts of the beauty sector. Writing in The Sun on Sunday, Cooper revealed that officials have been reassigned to a “returns and enforcement programme” aimed at businesses suspected of employing illegal workers.

Cooper expressed her surprise at discovering that 1,000 civil servants had been working on the now-cancelled plan to send migrants to Rwanda. The Rwanda scheme, a key policy of the previous Conservative government, was swiftly abolished by Labour following Sir Keir Starmer's general election victory.

In her article, Cooper stated: “We have instructed Immigration Enforcement to step up their operations this summer, targeting employers who are aiding criminal gangs by exploiting and facilitating illegal work in the UK – particularly in car washes and the beauty sector. We are also developing new plans for expedited decisions and returns for individuals from safe countries.

“The majority of people in this country want a well-managed and controlled asylum system, where Britain assists those fleeing conflict and persecution, but swiftly removes those with no right to remain.”

Border security has become a key priority for the Labour government, which has already initiated the establishment of the Border Security Command as promised in its manifesto. Cooper acknowledged that addressing the issue of small boats would require time and substantial effort, rather than quick fixes.

Immigration Officers to Target Car Washes and Beauty Sector This Summer

At this week's European Political Community summit, the Prime Minister discussed migration with other European leaders and indicated a willingness to consider offshore processing arrangements similar to those between Italy and Albania. However, he has faced criticism from Conservatives for scrapping the Rwanda scheme on his first day in office, with opponents arguing that it was a necessary deterrent to prevent Channel crossings.

Home Office figures reveal that 228 people in five boats, including a yacht, were brought to Dover on Saturday, bringing this year's total to 15,717. The perilous English Channel crossing continues to result in fatalities, with two deaths recorded last week and four on 12 July.
