Elon Musk Announces Tesla's Plan to Deploy Humanoid Robots Next Year

Elon Musk, the head of Tesla, has announced that the electric car manufacturer will begin producing and deploying humanoid robots starting next year. In a recent social media post, Musk revealed that these robots will initially be utilised within Tesla before being made available for sale in 2026.

This announcement comes amid Musk's efforts to reduce costs at Tesla due to decreasing demand for its vehicles. On Tuesday, the company reported a significant drop in profits, with earnings falling from $2.7 billion (£2.09 billion) to just under $1.5 billion (£1.16 billion) in the three months ending in June, as a result of sluggish sales.

“Our overall focus remains on reducing costs company-wide,” Tesla stated in an investor update on Tuesday.

Tesla's automotive revenue declined by 7% year-on-year in the quarter, despite several price cuts and incentives aimed at attracting customers. Nonetheless, the company managed a 2% increase in overall revenue, driven by growth in its energy storage business.

Musk's ventures have increasingly focused on technologies like artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and robotics amidst the slowing demand for electric vehicles. Previously, Musk had indicated that the humanoid robot, named Optimus, would be ready for deployment in Tesla factories by the end of this year.

“Tesla will have genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production for internal use next year and, hopefully, in high production for other companies by 2026,” Musk stated on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Other companies, such as Honda and Boston Dynamics, are also developing humanoid robots. Tesla aims to create an “autonomous humanoid robot” capable of performing “unsafe, repetitive, or boring tasks.” Musk has previously mentioned that the robots are intended to be mass-produced at a cost of under $20,000 (£17,900) each.

Musk is known for setting ambitious timelines for his companies, which are not always met. In 2019, he expressed confidence that Tesla would have self-driving taxis on the road by the following year. Earlier this year, Musk announced that the long-awaited robo-taxi would be unveiled on 8 August, though that event has reportedly been delayed.

On Tuesday, Tesla affirmed its commitment to working “vigorously” on robo-taxis, noting that the rollout's timing would also depend on regulatory approval.
