“Major Crackdown on Scam Calls: UK to Block Spoofed Numbers”
The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has announced that millions of suspicious calls from international scammers will be blocked under stricter telecoms regulations. From January 2025, phone companies will be required to stop calls from abroad that mimic UK landline numbers, a tactic known as “spoofing.”
This new regulation aims to protect individuals who may trust a call simply because it appears as a local UK number on their phones. Ofcom has also urged telecom firms to develop innovative solutions to combat fraudsters who spoof UK mobile numbers.
According to Ofcom, nearly half (48%) of UK landline users reported receiving a suspicious call in the past three months. Scammers often spoof phone numbers from trusted sources, such as individuals, organisations, or government departments, to increase the likelihood of their calls being answered.
These new blocking measures are expected to significantly reduce the public's exposure to scam calls. A recent survey of around 2,000 people revealed that some individuals receive an average of two fraudulent calls per day, with those over 75 being particularly susceptible.
“Scam calls can cause considerable financial and emotional distress to victims and diminish trust in telephone communications,” stated Lindsey Fussell of Ofcom.
This tightening of regulations follows a consultation period, during which BT voluntarily began blocking up to one million scam calls per day.
Ofcom advises against trusting caller ID displays and cautions against sharing personal information during incoming calls. Victims of Caller ID spoofing are encouraged to contact Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk.
