“JLR to Transform Halewood Plant with £500 Million Electric Car Investment”
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced plans to invest £500 million in upgrading its historic Halewood plant in Merseyside, as part of a broader strategy to ramp up electric vehicle production. This investment forms part of the company's larger £15 billion global commitment to transitioning towards electric mobility, first announced in 2023.
The substantial investment will transform Halewood into a hub for electric vehicle production, allowing it to manufacture both electric versions of its popular Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport models. The factory will also continue producing hybrid and combustion engine vehicles during the transition period. JLR aims to produce its first fully electric model at Halewood by early 2025.
The carmaker has already spent £250 million at the Merseyside site, upgrading production lines and incorporating new machinery, digital technology, and increasing its workforce. Over the coming years, an additional £250 million will be allocated to further modernise the plant.
The upgrades will include the installation of new robotics, a state-of-the-art body shop capable of producing 500 vehicle bodies per day, and advanced ovens for paint drying. These improvements will enable Halewood to become JLR's first fully electric production facility.
Barbara Bergmeier, JLR’s Executive Director of Industrial Operations, described Halewood as the “heart and soul” of the company's operations in the North West for over two decades. This transformation, she noted, will position JLR at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, with the ultimate goal of producing an all-electric fleet by 2030 under its ‘Reimagine’ strategy.
JLR's parent company, Tata Motors, is also playing a key role in funding this transition, as the automotive industry globally accelerates its shift toward more sustainable transportation solutions.
