Meta Layoffs: Staff Fired for Misusing Vouchers Amidst Wider Job Cuts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has reportedly dismissed a number of employees for abusing its meal voucher system, according to recent reports. The tech giant's staff are provided with daily meal allowances, intended for use on food, but some workers were allegedly found using these vouchers for non-food purchases such as toothpaste, washing powder, and even wine glasses.

Employees at Meta are given allowances of $25 (£19) for lunch, $20 for breakfast, and $25 for dinner, with the expectation that the funds are spent on food via Grubhub, a US food delivery platform. However, according to posts on anonymous workplace forum Blind, around 30 employees were dismissed last week for breaching the policy by using their credits for household items, sharing vouchers with others, or exceeding their allocated budget.

There are conflicting reports regarding whether or not employees received warnings before being dismissed. While some users on Blind claimed that warnings were issued and most employees ceased their misuse, others argued that no such warnings were given before the sackings.

In addition to the voucher-related dismissals, Meta has also reportedly cut jobs across several of its departments, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and its virtual reality division, Reality Labs, which is responsible for the Oculus headset. The company has not publicly commented on the voucher dismissals or the wider layoffs, but it has been reported that some affected employees are being moved into different roles or locations as part of Meta's long-term strategy.

Jane Manchun Wong, a former security engineer at Meta who gained recognition after being listed in Forbes' 30 Under 30 in 2022, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that she had lost her job in the recent round of layoffs.

A spokesperson for Meta told tech publication Verge that changes were being made to ensure resources are better aligned with the company’s strategic goals and locations, adding that the company works hard to find alternative positions for employees whose roles are made redundant.
