Financial Compliance: NatWest Cracks Down on Messaging App Use at Work
NatWest Group has restricted employees in the UK from using WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Skype on company devices, enforcing its policy of using only “approved channels” for internal communications. This block means that employees can no longer access these platforms on work phones or computers, a move aimed at ensuring business conversations remain on secure and fully retrievable networks.
This decision reflects growing concerns within both corporate and government sectors over the transparency and accountability of “off-channel” communications. Messages on applications like WhatsApp can be difficult to track, with options like disappearing messages that prevent proper oversight. In contrast, messages on official platforms are stored and can be reviewed if any improper conduct is suspected.
“Like many organisations, we only allow approved communication channels for conducting business, internally and externally,” NatWest stated, confirming the restriction came into effect earlier this month.

The issue of “off-channel” communications is particularly significant within the financial sector. In recent years, US banks such as JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citigroup have faced fines totalling $2.8 billion (£2.18 billion) for not adhering to record-keeping protocols. Now, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is considering launching an inquiry into how British bank employees use messaging apps for work.
This concern extends beyond banking into the public sector, where recent inquiries revealed how ministers and officials used WhatsApp for official communications during the COVID-19 pandemic, often resulting in missing or deleted messages. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly lost around 5,000 messages, while Cabinet Minister Penny Mordaunt informed the COVID inquiry that two years of her conversations with Johnson had been erased.
