BA Passengers Face Delays as Technical Problems Hit Operations

Passengers flying with British Airways (BA) experienced delays on Monday evening as the airline grappled with a “technical issue” affecting its computer systems. The disruption left travellers stranded on the tarmac at multiple airports in the UK and abroad, with some waiting in cold conditions for updates.

The problems reportedly began around 17:00, with passengers voicing their frustrations on social media. Complaints ranged from flight check-in issues to delays at departure gates, with one traveller describing being “stuck on the tarmac in Verona” in freezing temperatures.

Delays but No Cancellations.

In a statement, BA acknowledged the problem but reassured passengers that flights were not being cancelled. “Flights are operating, and we’ll finish our schedule this evening as planned. No cancellations, some delays. All of our critical operations are running,” the airline said.

Although the full scale of the disruption remains unclear, the issue appears to have impacted both domestic and international flights. Simon Calder, a travel expert, estimated that tens of thousands of passengers could be affected, with delays of one to two hours reported for most flights.

British Airways Disruption: What Passengers Need to Know About the IT Issue

Global Impact.

Reports of delayed flights came from various cities, including Hamburg, Naples, and Dusseldorf, with passengers also experiencing difficulties accessing the BA website. Downdetector, a platform that tracks technical problems, recorded a spike in complaints about BA's systems after 17:00.

Sources within the airline suggested the problem was being brought under control, but concerns remain that Monday’s delays could disrupt Tuesday’s flight schedule. Some pilots reportedly struggled to generate crucial loading data for their aircraft, while communication with colleagues by phone proved difficult.

A History of IT Failures

BA has faced similar technical disruptions in the past. In May 2022, IT problems grounded flights, and similar issues disrupted operations during Bank Holiday periods in 2017 and February 2020.

While Heathrow Airport confirmed its systems were unaffected by BA’s issues, the airline continues to work to resolve the situation and minimise knock-on effects for travellers.
