TikTok’s Future in Jeopardy: Trump Opposes Ban as Deadline Looms

US President-elect Donald Trump met with TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, on Monday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, as the social media platform faces a looming ban deadline. The meeting comes amid TikTok’s urgent efforts to delay or overturn US plans that could see the app banned unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divests ownership by 19 January.

A law passed earlier this year cites national security concerns as the reason for the ban, alleging ties between ByteDance and the Chinese government—allegations both ByteDance and TikTok have repeatedly denied. The legislation aims to “protect the national security of the United States from the threat posed by foreign adversary-controlled applications.”

TikTok’s Future in Jeopardy: Trump Opposes Ban as Deadline Looms

Legal Challenge and Supreme Court Appeal

TikTok has taken its fight to the US Supreme Court, filing an emergency request on Monday for a “modest delay” to the ban. The company argued that the delay would allow the Court to review the case and give the incoming administration time to evaluate the situation. TikTok described itself as “one of the most significant speech platforms” in the United States and warned that an immediate ban would cause “irreparable harm” to the company and its millions of users.

Trump’s Position

Interestingly, Trump now opposes the ban, despite supporting a similar move during his first term in office. Analysts suggest his change in stance is partly due to concerns that banning TikTok could boost Facebook, a platform he accuses of contributing to his 2020 election defeat.

However, the current law was passed with bipartisan support and has already survived TikTok’s challenge in a federal appeals court earlier this month. The court deemed the ban a culmination of “extensive bipartisan action” by Congress and successive administrations.

Countdown to the Deadline

The ban is scheduled to take effect on 19 January, just one day before Trump’s second inauguration on 20 January. With TikTok appealing to the Supreme Court and engaging in high-level discussions, the next few weeks will be critical in determining the app’s fate in the US.
