Apple to Revise AI Feature After BBC Criticism Over Inaccurate Alerts

Apple has announced plans to update its artificial intelligence (AI) notification summary feature after facing criticism for generating inaccurate alerts on its latest devices.

In a statement on Monday, the tech giant acknowledged concerns raised by the BBC and confirmed it is working on a software update to make it clearer when notifications are summaries created by Apple’s AI system.

The issue came to light following several errors, including an AI-generated alert falsely claiming that Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. More recently, the system incorrectly notified users that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship before the event began and that tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.

The BBC, which lodged a formal complaint, described the errors as damaging to trust in news and called for urgent action. “These AI-generated summaries are spreading misinformation that contradicts the original content, harming trust not only in the BBC but in news more broadly,” the broadcaster said.

Apple, however, has resisted calls to pause the feature entirely. Instead, it plans to implement a software update “in the coming weeks” to clarify when text has been summarised by its AI system.

The feature, available on iPhone 16 models and certain iPads and Macs running iOS 18.1 or later, was introduced in December as part of Apple’s broader AI tools. It aims to consolidate multiple app notifications into concise summaries on lock screens. The company described the feature as optional and encouraged users to report any inaccuracies.

Instances of blunt or literal interpretations by the AI have gone viral on social media. For example, one alert reportedly misrepresented New York Times coverage to suggest that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested, though this claim has not been independently verified.

Journalistic organisations, including Reporters Without Borders, have called for Apple to disable the feature, citing its immaturity in reliably generating public-facing information. Critics argue that the issues highlight the broader challenges of generative AI, a field also pursued by competitors such as Google.
