GPs Turn to AI to Alleviate Workload and Enhance Patient Care
With the challenges of securing a GP appointment and the increasing pressures faced by healthcare professionals, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a promising solution in the UK’s medical landscape.
Dr Deepali Misra-Sharp, a Birmingham-based GP, has adopted Heidi Health, a free AI-driven medical transcription tool, to streamline her workload. This tool, which listens and transcribes patient consultations, allows her to focus fully on patients during appointments.
“Previously, I’d be writing while speaking to patients, which took away from the quality of our interactions,” Dr Misra-Sharp explains. “Now, I can maintain eye contact and actively listen, leading to a more meaningful consultation.” The AI also reduces the risk of errors in note-taking, saving up to three minutes per consultation.
With GP workloads surging—each full-time GP now serves 2,273 patients, a 17% rise since 2015—AI tools are seen as a lifeline to mitigate burnout. According to a Health Education England report, implementing AI could save an estimated 5.7 million GP hours annually by automating tasks like note-taking and patient history analysis.
Companies such as Denmark’s Corti are at the forefront of this revolution. Their AI processes millions of consultations each year, offering suggestions for follow-up questions, treatments, and next steps based on patient data. Lars Maaløe, Corti’s co-founder, highlights the tool's ability to provide “colleague-like” advice during back-to-back consultations.
In England, around 1,400 GP practices are using C the Signs, another AI platform. This tool analyses medical records to identify cancer risks based on symptoms and patient history, facilitating timely referrals. “It doesn’t diagnose but assists in identifying potential issues,” says co-founder Dr Bea Bakshi. To date, the platform has conducted over 400,000 cancer risk assessments, detecting thousands of cases across various types.
While AI offers significant potential, experts urge caution. “AI can enhance healthcare but is not without its flaws,” notes Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, Chair of the BMA’s General Practice Committee. Issues such as bias, error, and patient privacy remain areas of concern. However, with proper safeguards, AI could transform the NHS by improving efficiency and empowering healthcare professionals.
