Thousands Affected as Three Mobile Network Experiences Widespread Outage

Mobile provider Three has apologised after thousands of customers across the UK reported being unable to make phone calls due to a significant network outage.

The issue, which also impacted smaller networks such as Smarty and iD Mobile that rely on Three’s infrastructure, was highlighted by Downdetector, a website that tracks online service disruptions. More than 10,000 users flagged problems on Thursday.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Three acknowledged the issue, describing it as affecting “a small percentage of voice services” and assured customers that their team was “working hard to fix this as soon as possible.” The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused.

While voice services were disrupted, users were still able to access mobile data and make emergency calls to 999 during the outage.

Three’s support team has informed customers that there is currently no set timeframe for the resolution but stressed their commitment to restoring services promptly.

Three Mobile Faces Backlash After Major UK Outage Leaves Customers Stranded

The company, which serves approximately 10.5 million customers in the UK, has not clarified how many users were affected by the outage.

Many customers took to social media to voice their frustration, with some reporting significant disruptions to their daily lives. One customer claimed they missed a medical appointment due to the inability to receive calls, while another said the outage left their daughter stranded.

Several customers expressed their intention to leave the network entirely as a result of the disruption.

It remains unclear whether affected customers will be eligible for compensation. According to Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, providers may consider offering refunds or compensation while repairs are underway.

This incident comes just a month after the Competition and Markets Authority approved a £16.5 billion merger between Three and rival network Vodafone. Coincidentally, the outage occurred on the same day that the AI platform ChatGPT also experienced a major disruption.
