Coca-Cola Recalls Products Across Europe Over Safety Concerns
Coca-Cola has issued a product recall in Europe after routine testing revealed higher-than-expected levels of chlorate, a chemical commonly associated with water treatment processes.
The recall primarily affects Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. However, the company confirmed that five product lines were briefly distributed in the UK late last year and have already been sold.
Chlorate can form when chlorine-based disinfectants are used during water treatment or food production. While Coca-Cola emphasised that the health risk to consumers is “very low,” it has alerted relevant authorities and is working closely with them to manage the situation.
No complaints have been reported in Great Britain regarding the affected products, and the company remains committed to ensuring the safety and quality of its beverages.
Exposure to elevated levels of chlorate can pose health risks, particularly for children and infants, potentially leading to thyroid issues or limiting the blood's ability to carry oxygen. Nutritionist Caron Grazette noted that the chemical, often used in disinfectants and fireworks, can also cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea when consumed in large quantities.
The higher chlorate levels were identified during routine quality checks at Coca-Cola's facility in Ghent, Belgium. Most unsold products have already been removed from shelves, and efforts are underway to retrieve any remaining stock.
A company spokesperson stated, “The quality and safety of our products remain our top priority.”
