Avanti West Coast Strike Action Called Off as Talks Resume
London – Planned strike action by Avanti West Coast train managers has been suspended, offering a glimmer of hope for passengers facing disruption. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) had been set to walk out on the next three Sundays in an ongoing dispute over rest day working arrangements.
The RMT's decision to postpone the strikes follows a rejection of a revised proposal by 83% of its 400 members involved in the dispute just before Christmas. Despite this rejection, the union has now described the suspension as a “breakthrough” and has agreed to return to the negotiating table.
Avanti West Coast has welcomed the suspension and reiterated its commitment to finding a resolution.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch credited the “strength and determination” of his members for forcing Avanti to “engage seriously” in the dispute.
“This breakthrough has been achieved through the strength and determination of our members, whose industrial action has forced Avanti to engage seriously with this dispute,” he stated. “As a result, strike action has been suspended to allow space for constructive talks.”
Lynch stressed the union's commitment to productive negotiations but warned that Avanti must demonstrate a “real willingness to compromise” to avoid a further escalation of the dispute.
An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said, “We remain open to working with the RMT to resolve this dispute and will continue to work together to find a resolution. This means that tickets will be back on sale for the dates concerned and we will be able to operate our normal Sunday timetable.”
Passengers can now breathe a sigh of relief as normal Sunday services are expected to resume. The next three weeks will be critical in determining whether a lasting agreement can be reached.
