“Revolutionising Food Waste: Tesco to Give Away Expiring ‘Yellow Sticker’ Items for Free”
Tesco is set to launch a pioneering trial in select Express stores across the UK, where expiring “yellow sticker” food items will be given away for free to customers at the end of the day. This initiative is part of Tesco’s broader strategy to reduce food waste and contribute to its ambitious target of halving waste by the end of the year.
The supermarket giant, which already donates surplus food to charities and food banks, will first offer these products to charities and staff before making them available to customers after 21:30. Although the specific locations and start date for the trial have yet to be confirmed, a Tesco spokesperson confirmed that this direct-to-customer approach marks the first of its kind in the UK.
Tesco, holding a 27.8% market share with 3,700 UK stores and 750 international outlets, joins other major chains such as Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, and Morrisons in a collective effort to combat food waste. While these rivals have partnerships with charities and offer steep discounts on near-expiry items, Tesco’s new policy is aimed at further integrating its waste reduction goals with its net-zero emissions strategy.
Despite strong sales figures during the Christmas season, Tesco’s initiative comes at a time when rising inflation and the cost of living are making basic foodstuffs like meat, eggs, and butter more expensive for households. Recent data from the Department for Work and Pensions shows that food insecurity has increased, with over seven million people now skipping meals due to financial constraints.
