“Cost-Cutting at Morrisons: 52 Café Closures and 17 Store Shutdowns Announced”
Morrisons has announced a series of cuts that will see the closure of 52 cafés and 17 convenience stores, potentially affecting hundreds of jobs. The supermarket chain is also set to discontinue several in-store services, including certain meat and fish counters, pharmacies, and all market kitchens – small food courts offering freshly prepared takeaway meals – as part of a wider strategy to reallocate funds to other parts of the business. The closures, which will be implemented over the coming months, target Morrisons Daily convenience stores with extended opening hours.
With increasing pressure from discounter rivals – notably Aldi, which overtook Morrisons as the UK's fourth largest supermarket chain in 2022 – Morrisons is striving to become more value-focused. Chief Executive Rami Baitiéh explained that the changes are “a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons” and will help direct investment into areas that customers value most. While most affected staff are expected to be redeployed, approximately 365 employees face redundancy.
These strategic adjustments follow similar moves by other major retailers. For example, Sainsbury’s recently announced the closure of its remaining cafés, noting that few shoppers use the service regularly. As competition intensifies, industry experts predict that Morrisons’ cost-cutting measures will enable the chain to better compete in a market where consumers are increasingly price-sensitive.
