Luton Airport Expansion Approved: New Terminal Set to Boost 32M Passengers by 2043
London Luton Airport is set to nearly double its annual passenger numbers to 32 million by 2043 following the UK government's approval of its expansion plans, which include the construction of a new terminal, additional taxiways, and increased capacity at the existing terminal. This decision comes despite the Planning Inspectorate's recommendation to reject the proposal over environmental concerns.
Luton Rising, the airport's owner, which is owned by Luton Borough Council, claims the expansion will deliver significant economic, employment, and social benefits for the town, promising the creation of up to 11,000 new jobs and an annual boost in economic activity of around £1.5bn.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the decision, emphasising that enhancing national infrastructure is key to driving growth and job creation. However, environmental campaigners have criticised the move, arguing that adding 70,000 more flights annually in the face of worsening climate change is “inhumane” and undermines the government’s net zero commitment by 2030.
This approval follows repeated delays in the expansion decision, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander having had additional time to consider the application. Notably, the decision comes at a challenging time for the region, as it was announced less than a week after the closure of Vauxhall’s van-making factory in Luton, which threatened 1,100 jobs.
