Elon Musk ‘Disappointed’ by Trump’s Spending Plan as GOP Rift Deepens
Elon Musk has publicly expressed disappointment with US President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending legislation, signalling a potential rift with the political figure he once helped secure re-election in 2024.
The tech mogul and Tesla boss criticised the multi-trillion-dollar bill, recently passed by the US House of Representatives and now under consideration by the Senate. Marketed by Trump as his “big, beautiful” plan, the legislation includes expansive tax cuts, increased defence expenditure, and an elevated debt ceiling.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk stated he was “disappointed” with the bill, arguing it undermines previous efforts he led to rein in government spending.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly,” Musk said in a pre-released clip. “It increases the budget deficit, not decreases it.”

Musk had previously served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), a taskforce aimed at eliminating wasteful government spending. He claimed the new legislation jeopardises the progress made by Doge, which reportedly saved $175 billion — though reporters has noted this figure lacks independent verification.
Referencing Trump’s catchphrase for the bill, Musk quipped, “A bill can be big or beautiful. I’m not sure it can be both.”
Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, maintained his support for the bill, highlighting its tax cuts and calling it “beautiful because of all the things we have.” He declined to directly address Musk’s criticism.
The proposed legislation seeks to extend Trump’s 2017 tax reforms, ramp up military funding, support mass deportation efforts, and raise the debt ceiling to $4 trillion. Analysts project the bill could widen the fiscal deficit by approximately $600 billion next year.
Musk, who reportedly donated over $250 million to support Trump’s 2024 campaign, recently indicated a withdrawal from political involvement, stating he plans to focus on his leadership at Tesla for at least five more years.
His tenure with Doge has sparked controversy, particularly over job cuts in federal agencies and reductions in foreign aid — actions he and Trump defended as measures to curb fraud and inefficiency.
While Musk insists he “did what needed to be done,” his recent comments may indicate growing distance between the two prominent figures.
