Royal Train Retirement Marks End of an Era: A Look into the Monarchy's Financial Reforms

In a move aimed at reducing expenses, Buckingham Palace has announced the retirement of the royal train by 2027, marking the end of an era for the British monarchy's dedicated rail service that dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria.

This decision is part of an ongoing effort to provide better value for money, as revealed in the latest release of the royal finances. Notably, a two-day trip on the royal train, covering Gloucestershire, Staffordshire, and London in February, incurred costs exceeding £44,000.

Despite this change, members of the Royal Family will continue to use standard rail services for their travels. The financial report also highlighted that last year saw the Royal Family undertaking 141 helicopter journeys, amounting to a cost of £475,000.

James Chalmers, Keeper of the Privy Purse and the individual responsible for overseeing royal finances, described the decommissioning of the royal train as a significant moment, emphasizing the importance of progress without being hindered by tradition. There are plans to conduct a farewell tour of the UK with the train before its retirement, after which it may be displayed to the public. The royal train, which includes nine carriages with separately hired locomotives, has been a symbol of royal transportation since Queen Victoria initiated its use in 1869.

Reflecting on its historic role, Chalmers acknowledged the deep affection and care shown towards the royal train, especially during its usage in significant events such as the late Queen Elizabeth's golden and diamond jubilees. Despite the most recent refurbishment in the mid-1980s, the latest accounts for 2024-25 reveal that the train was used on only two occasions, raising questions about its maintenance and storage costs amid other rising travel expenses.

The royal travel expenditure for the year stood at £4.7 million, showing an increase of £500,000 from the previous year, with the most substantial single cost being a £400,000 trip to Australia and Samoa by the King and Queen.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, the Sovereign Grant, which funds the monarchy's operational costs, remains at £86.3m. This is set to increase to £132.1m for the next two years to facilitate Buckingham Palace's renovation, part of a decade-long, £369m project, significantly elevating the grant to roughly three times its initial amount since its introduction in 2012.

The Crown Estate's profits determine the grant, originating from the Treasury. Meanwhile, the latest annual report discloses the Royal Family's involvement in over 1,900 engagements and nearly 94,000 guests participating in events at royal properties, including the state visit from Qatar.

Financial results for the Duchy of Cornwall, which supports the Prince of Wales, showed a slight decrease in profit at £22.9m. In response to scrutiny over financial practices, Kensington Palace has announced a shift towards a “modern, socially minded” approach, showcasing a commitment to social initiatives and environmental concerns.

However, the level of royal funding has faced criticism from anti-monarchy groups, particularly Republic, whose CEO, Graham Smith, condemned the expenditure as excessive, especially against the backdrop of discussions on welfare cuts for the disabled, noting that the published figures do not account for security costs.
