US President Donald Trump has expressed his disappointment at his once close associate, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, over Musk's recent announcement of forming a new political platform.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump conveyed his dismay, stating, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,' essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Musk, who had been hinting at such a move for weeks, revealed over the weekend on the social platform X that he had established the America Party. This new political entity aims to offer an alternative to the traditional Republican and Democratic parties.
This revelation follows a turbulent period in the relationship between Trump and the Tesla CEO. Trump had previously selected Musk to preside over the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), an initiative focused on reducing federal expenditure.
In his online remarks, Trump also targeted Musk's advocacy for an “Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate”. He criticised the proposal for purportedly compelling consumers to transition to electric vehicles within an unrealistically short time frame.
Moreover, Trump highlighted the contrast between Musk's proposals and his own fiscal policies. Trump's plans, which he jovially refers to as his “big, beautiful bill”, encompass the termination of tax incentives for electric vehicle purchases.
