New £650m Scheme Unveiled: Major Discounts on Electric Vehicles for UK Buyers
Electric vehicle purchasers are set to benefit from a reduction of up to £3,750 off new electric cars following the government's unveiling of grants aimed at encouraging the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles. The Department for Transport (DfT) announced that the price cuts will be applicable to cars priced up to £37,000, with the greenest cars benefiting from the largest discounts.
From Wednesday, manufacturers can apply for this funding, with the RAC predicting that consumers could see the discounted vehicles in showrooms within a few weeks. However, there has been feedback to the Reporters from some potential buyers about the need for a more comprehensive network of charging stations to fully embrace electric vehicles (EVs).

This move comes as part of the UK's ambitious plan to cease the sale of new solely petrol or diesel cars and vans by 2030. The available discounts under this new initiative will vary between £1,500 and £3,750, allowing consumers to apply the discount directly at the point of sale.
Funding for the scheme, which amounts to £650m, is set to last for three years. Despite there being approximately 1.3 million electric cars on UK roads, the country currently has just around 82,000 public charging points. Over the weekend, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced a separate £63m investment towards expanding the network of EV charging points.
However, this investment might not be timely enough for some, like Carolyn Hammond, 49, from North Devon, who discussed the challenges of transitioning to electric due to the limitations of her home's electricity supply and the high costs associated with upgrading.
Despite some criticisms suggesting an undue haste in pushing towards electric vehicles, Alexander highlighted that the EV grant is poised to benefit both consumers and the automotive industry by making zero-emission cars more affordable than ever. This initiative comes with the added advantage of preferable tax rates, offering considerable savings for working families.
Conversely, concerns have been raised by the Shadow Transport Secretary, Gareth Bacon, who argued that the government's strategy forces families into pricier electric vehicles prematurely, suggesting that the country is not yet adequately prepared for such a transition.
Amongst the public, opinions vary. Jimmy Kim from London shared his hesitations regarding the cost-effectiveness of switching to electric, taking into account the long-term ownership costs and depreciation of EVs. On the other hand, Paul Cole, also from London, praised his decision to swap to electric, citing the convenience of a pre-installed home charging point and the economical benefits of charging the vehicle overnight.
Additionally, it's worth noting that electric car buyers are entitled to tax benefits if their employer offers a company car scheme. Despite the grants for EVs being terminated in 2022 under Conservative governance, they were initially introduced in 2011 to make new electric vehicles more affordable. The conclusion of these grants led to a refocusing of funds towards overcoming the primary obstacles in the transition to electric vehicles, including boosting public charging infrastructure and supporting the purchase of electric vans, taxis, and motorcycles.
