Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away at 82: A Look Back at His Legacy and Final Farewell
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria's Ex-President, Laid to Rest in Daura
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been laid to rest at his residence in the north of Nigeria, following his passing at a London clinic at the age of 82.

His remains were repatriated to Nigeria earlier on Tuesday, with his successor, Bola Tinubu, present at the airport in Katsina state to welcome him back. The procession then moved to Buhari's home town of Daura, where Islamic funeral prayers were conducted at the central mosque, attended by hundreds.
The ceremony saw Buhari interred in a burial site within his property, with notable figures such as Tinubu, Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Buhari's Deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, in attendance.
Prior to the interment, military salutes were rendered, and the Nigerian flag that draped the coffin was carefully folded and handed to Buhari's family.
In tribute to Buhari, who also served as a former army general and was one of only two individuals to have led Nigeria both as a military head and a democratically elected president, the government declared a public holiday on Tuesday.
Originally scheduled for Monday, the funeral was delayed due to logistical reasons, with Vice-President Kashim Shettima indicating that Buhari passed away after a brief illness, though no further details were given.
Buhari, a figure of austerity who first came to power as a military ruler, later emerged victorious in the 2015 elections, defeating an incumbent to serve two four-year terms. This victory marked him as the first opposition leader to achieve such a feat.
His predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan, and former military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida, from whom Buhari faced a coup in 1985, were among those who paid homage to his deep sense of duty and modesty in public life.
Newly appointed President Tinubu has announced a seven-day national mourning period, commencing with the lowering of all national flags to half-mast across Nigeria, in honour of Buhari. In his condolence statement, Tinubu reflected on the nation's duty to farewell the former leader with the utmost respect and dignity.
Muhammadu Buhari, whose political and military career left an indelible mark on Nigeria's history, is survived by his family, including his children Halima, Fatima, and Zahra Buhari, and his spouse Aisha Buhari.
