The Eternaut Breakthrough: How Netflix's AI-Generated Visuals Are Shaping the Future of TV
Netflix has ventured into groundbreaking territory by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-generated visual effects into an original series, marking a first for the entertainment behemoth. During the release of the Argentine science fiction series, The Eternaut, co-chief executive of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, revealed that AI was instrumental in crafting a scene depicting the dramatic collapse of a building. This pioneering approach, he explained, enables quicker sequence production and slashes costs significantly.
However, the employment of generative AI, capable of rendering videos and images from specified prompts, has sparked debate within the entertainment realm. Critics argue it utilises the creative works of others without permission and poses a threat to human jobs.

In parallel with these groundbreaking revelations, Netflix announced a robust 16% surge in its revenue, reaching $11 billion (£8.25 billion) for the quarter ending June, compared with the same timeframe the previous year. This financial upturn was complemented by a profit boost from $2.1 billion to $3.1 billion.
The success story further unfurled with the mention of the company's South Korean thriller, Squid Game, entering its third and conclusive series, captivating an audience of 122 million thus far.
Sarandos highlighted that AI technology empowers productions, particularly those with constrained budgets, to embrace high-grade visual effects. Specifically, The Eternaut benefited immensly from generative AI, achieving a complex building collapse sequence in Buenos Aires up to tenfold faster than through conventional means. “The cost otherwise would have been prohibitive,” Sarandos noted, underlining the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the AI-driven process.
This embrace of AI did not go unnoticed in industry circles, especially amidst the Hollywood strike of 2023. The strike underscored the entertainment industry's growing concern over AI, with calls for stricter regulatory measures regarding its application.
Amidst this backdrop of technological advancement and controversy, figures like film magnate Tyler Perry voice apprehensions about AI's potential to disrupt job security within the industry. On the flip side, supporters like Davier Yoon, co-founder of Singapore's CraveFX animation studio, regard Netflix's move as a natural progression. According to Yoon, generative AI merely adds to the arsenal of tools available to visual effects artists, democratizing the ability to achieve cinematic grandeur on more modest budgets. “AI certainly opens doors, but it's the artist who ultimately shapes the final vision,” he remarked, emphasizing the creative control that remains firmly in the hands of humans.
