Great British Railways Expands: c2c Joins Public Sector in Historic Move
Rail services connecting South Essex with the capital have now returned to public hands for the first time since the previous century. The c2c line, facilitating journeys between Fenchurch Street and Shoeburyness, was nationalised this Sunday.
This pivotal shift sees the c2c operations being integrated into the Great British Railways, an entity established by the government to streamline the rail network across England, Wales, and Scotland.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has highlighted the issues plaguing passengers, including “spiralling costs, fragmentation, and waste.” The government has leveraged the ability to re-nationalise rail companies as their contracts come to an end, thanks to powers granted under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024, enacted by Labour last November.
With c2c's transition, it marks the sixth rail operator to be brought under state control. It is soon to be joined by Greater Anglia, which operates throughout the East of England, with its nationalisation scheduled for 12 October.
Alexander has emphasised that moving to public ownership is a significant step towards rectifying the “deep-rooted problems” within the rail sector. She envisages a more cohesive rail system under the umbrella of the Great British Railways, promising a streamlined approach to rail service provision that prioritises passenger satisfaction across the board.
The broader ambition of these nationalisation efforts, according to the government, is to realise potential savings up to £150m while simultaneously mitigating delays and reducing service cancellations.
David Burton-Sampson, Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, echoed the sentiment of positive change, foreseeing improvements in service quality, ticketing consistency, and punctuality for passengers.
Contrastingly, Jerome Mayhew, the shadow rail minister and Conservative MP for Norfolk, voiced concerns that such nationalisation endeavors might escalate taxpayers' burdens through increased costs in leasing rolling stock. He accused the government of jeopardising successful operations due to “ideological reasons.”
