British Holidays at Risk: Rising Expenses Could Cause £34.86 Billion Economy Hit by 2028
The quintessential British holiday is facing a crisis, as the Labour Party has issued a stark warning about a looming economic disaster that could see a £22 billion hit to the nation's economy. Britons are increasingly shunning traditional holiday pursuits like camping, casting a shadow over the future of the UK's domestic tourism industry.
Despite experiencing three heatwaves this year and the commencement of the school summer holidays, the forecast for domestic tourism remains grim. “Domestic tourism is a crucial component of our economy, yet it has been utterly neglected,” asserted Daniel Attwood from the campaign group Back British Holidays. This organisation, initiated by Out & About Live, has been vociferously calling for immediate action from the Government to halt the decline and safeguard the myriad of small businesses that populate the sector.

An alarming report by the group disclosed that the number of domestic holidays is predicted to plummet from 42.3 million in 2022 to 25.5 million in 2025, representing a near 40% decrease.
In light of this downward trajectory, Back British Holidays foresees a colossal loss of £22.24 billion to the economy by the year's end, escalating to £34.86 billion by 2028.
Daniel relayed to the Express that heightened costs are deterring individuals from partaking in staycations, despite the favourable weather of late.
He lamented that the surging prices are necessitating that individuals expend more for the same experiences, contributing to the ongoing dwindling of domestic tourism. Daniel cautioned that without urgent governmental measures, this trend is unlikely to reverse.
Particularly affected are camping sites, with several reporting reduced reservations for the peak season. Iconic elements of the British holidaying tradition, such as caravanning and camping, are expected to witness more than £1.2 billion in lost revenue this year, a 39% decline in expenditure, as per the campaigners.
Mike Thomas, proprietor of Bay Ness Farm in Robin Hood's Bay, echoes this sentiment. Despite the campsite's captivating views of the Yorkshire Coast and verdant landscapes, Mike observed an 18% decline in bookings this summer and a 15% decrease overall this year.
Upon comparing his disappointing annual figures, Mike discovered that similar downturns were afflicting other tourism-reliant entities in the region, with revenues shrinking by up to 20%.
“I was quite taken aback, it seems everyone is slightly worse off,” he remarked. Mike attributes this downturn to the broader economic challenges currently facing the nation, which have reduced the disposable income of potential holidaymakers.
Moreover, those who do have funds for summer getaways or weekend escapes are increasingly choosing destinations abroad, further exacerbating the struggles of domestic campsites.
Mike noted, “There's simply less money circulating. People are either holding onto their money in anticipation of a recession or finding that venturing out for camping isn't as budget-friendly as it once was.”
Mike's experiences are not isolated, with VisitEngland reporting a 12% drop in spending on overnight trips within England by Britons to £1.9 billion in April 2025 compared to the previous year.
Britons undertook 5.9 million overnight trips in England during April, a 21% decrease from April 2024, with VisitEngland noting declines across all categories of trips.
Daniel expresses concern that the ongoing decline could severely impact vulnerable coastal communities. “In a worst-case scenario, we could see businesses folding this year,” he cautioned, highlighting the broader implications for local tourism, employment, and associated incomes critical to tourist-reliant areas.
